CBD, or Cannabidiol, is one of the most researched herbal compounds today. Cannabidiol is readily produced by the least processed form of the cannabis plant, better known as hemp. Unlike its psychoactive counterpart, THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, CBD does not cause any mind-altering effects. Instead CBD improves many physiological functions throughout the body, benefiting appetite, mood, memory and pain control.
Cannabinoids are a class of diverse chemical compounds that act on specific receptors in our cells that alter neurotransmitter release in the brain. Our body does produce certain cannabinoids on its own. The receptors for these cannabinoids are grouped into two types, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are found primarily in the brain, influencing neurological activity including movement, coordination, mood or emotion, memory, thought processes, appetite and pain control. CB2 receptors are more commonly found in the immune system, affecting inflammation and pain relief. Studies currently find the medicinal use of CBD oil prompts our own biological production of cannabinoids and improves overall receptor function.

CBD oil is used in different ways to relieve symptoms. Some CBD products can be mixed into food or beverages, taken from a pipette or dropper, used as a lozenge or sublingual spray, or are available as a balm to be massaged into the skin. CBD oil can also be purchased in capsule form.
Risks and side effects of Cannibidiol use are limited, but may include dry mouth, lightheadedness, low blood pressure and/or slowed digestion. Higher doses or sensitivity may cause drowsiness, hallucination or impaired motor function.
A range of concentrations and doses from 10mg to 600mg have been studied for the above-noted conditions. It is commonly recommended to begin with a smaller dose; if well-tolerated then increase the dosage slowly over a period of days or weeks. Initial doses for relief of chronic pain starts with 2.5-20mg of CBD oil daily. To treat sleep disorders, begin with 40-160mg. For epilepsy or neurodegenerative disease, between 40-300mg may be used. Dosages will likely change with emerging studies and upcoming regulations.
Always consult your local healthcare provider to discuss possible drug interactions and legalities within your state. CBD is not yet FDA approved. In some states, a prescription may be required. Some companies do compound CBD with the psychoactive component THC; be sure to purchase from a reliable brand or company to ensure efficacy and proper use. Pure CBD oil should not yield a positive test result on a drug screen unless it is manufactured alongside THC-containing products. Be aware that CBD oil may increase the sedative effects of certain medications and supplements including 5-HTP, Kava, Melatonin, SAM-e, Skullcap, St. John's Wort, and Valerian root.
